You’ll probably hear a lot about the ratio of calcium to phosphorous in your puppy’s diet. So, what is all the fuss about?
Let’s start with the basics
Calcium is important for bone formation, blood coagulation, muscle contraction and nerve impulse transmission. Phosphorous is also important, but too much of it can cause renal failure.
The Calcium:Phosphorous ratio
Calcium and phosphorous work together in the body to maintain the growth and structure of the skeletal system. Deficiencies or excesses of both can create skeletal problems, especially in young puppies.
Getting it right
Ask your vet to recommend a dry food that contains the correct Ca:P ratio for your dog’s size and breed.
